The business of the mind is to serve the soul. The problem arises when the mind starts to learn things that do not serve our cause, thus imposing on us a life that has nothing in common with our soul’s purpose.
This must be taken into consideration when we choose our schooling program. Too many students are studying subjects that do not correspond to their soul’s purpose. That is why strong characters often drop out of college to pursue their dreams. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg are famous examples of people who followed their dream and refused to program their minds outside of alignment with their soul’s purpose.

The role of the mind is protection by adaptation to circumstances, not to making decisions independently. This is only possible when the connection between mind and soul is maintained, often through meditation.
Those who have seen the movie “Eagle Eye” where an artificial intelligence program of the same name, initiated by the CIA, starts to make decisions on its own, can picture what the ill mind is capable of. In this movie, the protection software “eagle eye” decides to eliminate the president and the government and replace them with its judgment. The movie ends well as a young lad is taking action and informs the highest levels of the government of the imminent disaster. The system is shut down and the world is saved. In a metaphorical sense, he realigned the government (the soul) with its actions (managing the country, the body).

We have also examples of movies showing how the mind can be at the service of the soul. In the two movies “Forrest Gump” and “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared”, the main characters seem to be simple-minded. Yet, each manages to create a great life as his mind is not overactive and independent but rather concentrated on his protection and adaptation to the circumstances.
On the other hand, the characters in Woody Allen’s movies are more neurotic, with minds that dominate their behaviour. Particularly the movie “Zelig” where the main character achieves notoriety for his ability to look and act like anyone he meets, thus letting his mind dominate his core being.
The mind can bring us to odd places where we don’t belong. This is also the danger of positive thinking seminars. They might bring some of us to a higher level financially, professionally or in another area of our life, eventually. But even in this “upgraded” position at the top of society, we will not reach real success if our mind is not aligned with our soul’s purpose. We all know countless stories of celebrities with miserable lives, these are the result of non-alignment. An old Indian saying sums it this phenomenon well; “Be careful what you wish for; you may receive it.”.
